Winston S. Churchill, The Maverick Politician
Winston S. Churchill was born on Nov. 30th in Blenheim palace near Oxford, England where he was born into a privileged lifestyle, as his family was extremely wealthy. In his early life, he performed poorly throughout his academic career and decided to join the military and was recruited into the military and was stationed at Sandhurst. According to Biography, after his service at Sandhurst, he began to travel the world as a journalist and composed 5 books by the age of 26 about his encounters in India and South Africa. [1]
On September 3rd 1939, Britain declared war on Germany as Hitler betrayed their trust and didn’t keep true to his promise. In 1940, He was chosen as Prime Minister of Britain and that’s when his political career was at his peak as he displayed excellent leadership qualities and characteristics. Churchill had great decision-making abilities as he thought with great clarity and combined with his amazing rhetoric potential he filled the nation with hope as citizens listened to his speeches through the radio and in person; he encouraged the allied forces to overcome the Axis powers as they thought defeat was inevitable. After the incident in Pearl Harbor, Churchill was joyous that the U.S. would have to participate in the war and became apart of the allied forces to assist Britain in defeating Germany. According to History, “In the following months, Germany operated vicious air raids over Britain for 3 consecutive months; resulting in the death of 20,000 civilians and destruction of over 1,000,000 homes.”[2] Churchill kept the spirit of the troops high as he encouraged them to keep fighting and giving the war their full potential and in the end it resulted in Britain’s favor, as they emerged victorious. On May 7th, 1945 Germany surrendered to the Allied Forces but it was still a loss for everyone as 300,000 British soldiers
were killed fighting the war and nearly 60,000 civilians were lost in the process. Winston Churchill provided great influence on the Allied forces and guided and supported them with great leadership through his speeches and it resulted in Britain being the victors of the war.
In conclusion, after the 2nd world war Winston Churchill stepped down from the prime minister position in 1945 and was then elected Prime Minister for the second time in 1951 in order to prevent the spread of Communism along with Soviet Union and served his term until 1955. In the midst of the end of his career he was awarded with a Nobel prize for his works of literature and remained apart of parliament until his death on January 24th of 1965 where the nation held a funeral in remembrance for one of the worlds greatest leaders who is memorialized by the successful two terms he served.
